Chartered financial planners, Hugh Davies Associates (HDA), gave Dave Pearce the confidence to retire and now every day is a weekend for him and wife Eileen.
The couple had long-yearned to retire at 60 so they could help look after their grandchildren and enjoy life but didn’t think they could afford to.
During a routine review meeting in 2013, MD Robin Etherington did the sums and told them that Dave, then 59, could retire as soon as he liked, joining Eileen, also 59, who had already stopped work.
Following the meeting, Dave put the wheels in motion and by the following spring the couple were free to live life as they chose.
HDA gives Eileen and Dave the key to the retirement they dreamed of
Eileen said: “This is the retirement we wanted – to be free by 60. We wouldn’t have had the confidence or knowledge to do it alone.”
“Robin took us in hand and he just made it happen,” remembers Dave. “He said ’You can stop work now if you want.’ It was seamless.”
The couple, who live in Abbeymead, Gloucester, had worked since they were 16. Dave was immensely successful in his job as chief executive of a charity, but he was starting to feel the stress of that success as the role grew.
Eileen said: “Stress is a killer. Robin gave us an escape route. It’s wonderful now. Every day is a weekend. We’re living now, rather than just working every day.”
Dave said: “We’re not the sort of people to make a big splash. We both love gardening, walking and long weekends away. I’ve even started playing golf twice a week, something I never thought I would have the time to do.”
Eileen and Dave, who have been married for 40 years, have a son and two grandchildren. They have always been ‘savers’ and cautious financially, something that Robin and his team at HDA are aware of.
“Robin just sees you through. He knows us and we don’t have to explain what we want. He’s fair, totally approachable and always there for us.”
Eileen has been a client of HDA for 26 years and Dave for 16 and they wouldn’t go anywhere else.
“We always joke that Robin isn’t allowed to retire!” laughs Eileen. “He has never steered us wrong, in over 25 years, and we want to make sure that continues! If and when it comes to that, we know we’ll still be in good hands. We can now relax and enjoy our retirement.”
