A Rewarding Marriage
Have you ever said “I deserve a medal for being married to you!” – or, perhaps “You deserve a medal for being married to me!”?
Well the government isn’t handing out medals but they will give you a reward for being married if you qualify. This has to be one of the easiest (legal!) ways there is to get your hands on some free government cash.
The Marriage Tax Allowance (MTA) started on 6th April 2015 and was worth up to £212 at that time. For the new tax year it is now worth up to £220 so if you claim today you will not only get the new amount but you can backdate it to get last year’s allowance making it a total of up to £432!
So how can you qualify?
Are you under 81?
Are you married or in a civil partnership?
Do you earn between £0 and £11,000?
Is your partner a basic 20% rate taxpayer, i.e. usually earning £11,000 to £43,000?
If so, you qualify.
How does it work?
The MTA allows non-taxpayers to transfer 10% of their Personal Allowance, i.e. £1,100 to their taxpaying spouse giving them £1,100 more of their income tax-free which amounts to an additional £220 per annum in their take home pay.
How do I apply?
It’s very easy, the ‘non-taxpayer’ has to apply by using the application form at You will need both your National Insurance numbers and one other acceptable form of ID for the non-taxpayer. If you have any problems then you can call 0300 200 3300 and do it by phone.
