    Case Studies

IT consultant Phil Hopgood has been with Hugh Davies Associates (HDA) since day one, when the company was founded 30 years ago.

He says he’s surprised that he is in such a good position financially – but that it’s down to MD Robin Etherington and his team. “Robin’s a bright cookie,” he said.

Phil, now 65, could retire but he loves his work and likes to keep active. “I am drawing my state pension and, thanks to Robin, I have a solid personal pension plan, but I need something to keep me busy!”

HDA has arranged two mortgages and a pension plan for Phil and he is soon to seek advice again as he and his partner are selling their individual properties, one in Nailsworth and one in Tewkesbury, and buying a home together.

Robin has steered Phil to a sound financial position over 30 years

Phil says he could have done the research and handled his financial affairs himself but he would rather pay Robin, who takes great pains to explain things in plain-speaking terms.

“I haven’t got the time to do it myself. I pay Robin because I want him to make a profit and continue to be there to help and advise,” he said.

“Robin has been very good to me over the years. I can’t praise him enough. He’s a very upfront guy,” he said.

“If I ask him a stupid question four times, he’ll give me a sensible answer four times. I’m surprised to find myself in such a good position and that’s been Robin’s doing.

“I’m not risk adverse but I don’t like to take too many risks. Robin makes sure you’re comfortable with his advice but he is encouraging me to be a bit more adventurous.”

Phil has had his fair share of financial and health issues over the years and Robin has always been them for him – at times to a surprising extent.

“Robin pops over to my place when we need a review and he’s always happy to talk as a financial adviser and a friend. Once when I was between contracts, he even offered to help me find work. I’ve known him for 30 years and it’s clear to see he cares about my goals as much as I do.”
